Project story

Editorial notes

The homeowners wanted their house to make an impression from the moment you arrive and to have a place downstairs to settle in. The work happened in two parts.

At the front, the open porch was enclosed to create a mudroom that sets the tone for the whole house: a run of windows across the front, new French doors as the entry, and the home's original wood front door now opening from the mudroom inside. A bold botanical wallpaper in deep greens and teals wraps the upper walls, while muted marble-look tile, white paneled wainscoting and a white planked ceiling keep it light and airy. A hand-carved console, a simple bench, woven runners, sheer curtains and a fern make it cosy and a little eclectic.

Downstairs, the basement became a moody library and bar. Paneled walls painted a deep, saturated blue wrap the room, with brass-framed open shelves on either side of the fireplace, brass sconces and built-in benches along the walls. Cream swivel chairs, a cognac leather ottoman and knit poufs invite long conversations and quiet reading, and white botanical relief art in wood frames echoes the garden theme at the front door.

Walkthrough

The mudroom

Large, quiet tiles and white millwork give the eye somewhere to rest, which lets the wallpaper be as bold as it wants. The original front door, in warm wood, becomes a feature of the room.

The basement library

Deep blue paneling makes the lower level feel enveloping rather than dark. Built-in benches and a warm wood slat divider by the stair were in place before the paint went on; brass, leather and soft textiles came last.
