Moving guide
Moving is easier in small steps. This outline works for a move across town or across the country.
Six to eight weeks before
Book movers or reserve a truck, and collect quotes early in busy months.
Start sorting: keep, donate, sell and discard, room by room.
Two to four weeks before
Arrange utility shut-off and start dates for both homes.
Update your address with the post office, banks, employers and subscriptions.
Pack rarely used rooms first and label boxes by room and priority.
The final week
Pack a first-night box: bedding, toiletries, chargers, medications and basic tools.
Confirm timing with movers and your agent for the final walk-through.
Settling in
Change or rekey locks and test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first; leave styling for later, once you know how the rooms live.
